I don't know about you, but around here we are huge fairy tale fans! There is just something so special about the magic and whimsy a fairy tale holds. And we can learn so much from the obstacles the characters face within the story.
So what was supposed to be a one month project from Brave Writer's Jot It Down program, has turned into a year long (with no plans to stop anytime soon) Unit Study! And we are having so much fun!
This unit study is loosely based on the activity from Brave Writer - Jot It Down. And if you have not purchased that, you really should! But that is for another post. It was more of an inspiration, but I want to give credit where credit is due!
And if the activity from Jot It Down was a spark, the Fairy Tales Science book was the flame that brought this Unit Study to life. I found this book in a small book store while visiting a town near by mine. And I almost passed it up y'all! We actually left the book store and did some other shopping and had some lunch, but there was this little something in me that kept telling me I need that book. We had parked near by, so right before we got in the car, I told my friend who was with me that I wanted to run in and pick up that book before we left. And boy oh boy am I so glad I did!!
It has turned out to be one of my all time favorite resources for our homeschool. Basically, it takes a fairy tale and uses since to explain how something in the store could be possible (or sometimes why it must be magic!). So each fairy tale as at least one or two experiments and/or activities that explain the science behind the story. My girls and I could not love this book more! Click on the image to the right to head on over to Amazon and pick it up!
We are about half way through this book, and I will be very sad to see it end. But it really is one of my all time favorite resources!
If you want to see a peek inside and here more about how we are doing the fairy tale unit study in our homeschool, watch the video below:
And one last thing I wanted to mention, we are combining this unit study with our world geography unit study by pairing the stories that take place in or were written by someone from the country were are studying. This has been a really fun way to make connections with are learn. And I really feel like it is helping give my girls a better understanding of what the cultures are like in the countries we are studying. If you want to hear more about how we are combining them, watch the video below or head on over to my blog post HERE.
Have you studied Fairy Tales in your homeschool? What resources did you use that you loved? If you have not, do you plan to sometime in the future? I would love to chat with you down below in the comments!
